Feeling lost or overwhelmed by the high school admissions process?
You’re not alone. Each year, we hear from dozens of families who are confused by the high school admissions process.
The good news is that there are a lot of great high schools in New York City. In fact, some of the best high schools in the country are located right here in the five boroughs!
Some of these schools are known as the Specialized High Schools, which include the following:
- The Bronx High School of Science
- The Brooklyn Latin School
- Brooklyn Technical High School
- High School of American Studies at Lehman College
- High School of Mathematics, Science, & Engineering (HSMSE) at the City College of New York
- Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
- Staten Island Technical High School
- Stuyvesant High School
- Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts
With the exception of Laguardia, all of the above schools require 8th graders to take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).
8th grade is a very busy time, especially for those families applying to independent and/or parochial schools. With multiple deadlines and overlapping obligations, it’s a stressful time for both students and parents. You can help reduces stress by planning ahead. For example, don’t wait until the fall to visit schools when you should be focused on getting ready for the SHSAT instead.
