Who is this course for? What prerequisite knowledge do students need to have?

This course is intended for 7th graders planning to sit for the 2025 SHSAT test dates.

This course is appropriate for 7th graders who have excelled in their 6th grade common core education. When determining whether or not a student has achieved this level of content mastery, we recommend weighing state test exam outcomes more heavily than grades received in school. In general, students who received 3.0+ on state exams may expect the program to be appropriately challenging. This is because the topics we will cover in our program build on the learning students have received in elementary school and into middle school. Students who did not excel in their 6th grade common core education, or who need additional support to review those 6th grade concepts, may find the program to be very challenging, and may need to pursue additional supplemental enrichment that is beyond the scope of the program.

Participation in the following pre-work is optional, and there is no requirement for it to be submitted during class. This valuable resource serves as a self-assessment tool for students to gauge their understanding of the content and the expectations before commencing the course.

Please order this 7th grade workbook [linked] to ensure that your child is ready. If students do not reach all of the following benchmarks, they may find the applications semester to be very challenging and may need additional support.

7th Grade Workbook Benchmarks

The math workbook linked above contains 7 chapters. Each chapter begins with a Pretest. Without the use of a calculator, your child should aim to score
  • at least 90% on the Pretests for Chapters 1-4,
  • at least 70% on the Chapter 5 Pretest,
  • at least 80% on the Chapter 6 Pretest,
  • at least 90% on the Chapter 7 Pretest, and
  • at least 85% on the Final Test (pg. 142)

What should my student expect from the course?

  • Applications (Summer between 7th and 8th Grade - 8 Classes + 2 Digital Practice Tests)
    • gives students the opportunity to apply the fundamentals to test-like questions and scenarios
    • reinforces concepts in 7th grade common core curriculum
    • introduces students to the test-taking strategies needed for success on the test
    • includes a diagnostic and two digital practice tests: a start-of-semester and end-of-semester practice test
  • Reinforcement (Fall 8th Grade - 6 Classes + 3 Digital Practice Tests)
    • provides students the opportunity to build good test-taking habits
    • reinforces the concepts covered in Applications
    • includes three digital practice tests to help build confidence through experience

Where and when are in-person classes held?

In-person classes will be hosted at 222 Broadway, 750 Lexington Avenue, or 120 Warren Street (one of our partner locations). If, due to public health and safety policies, in-person classes must be converted to online classes, we will be prepared to do so quickly, and will communicate this change via email.

Please click the linked date ranges linked in section 2 above for specific locations, dates, and times.

Please note: All dates/times/locations are tentative, subject to minimum enrollment requirements, and may be changed. If you sign up for a specific date/time/location and we are unable to offer it, we will gladly switch you into a different course, or provide you with a full refund.

Where and when are practice tests held?

You are able to enroll for in-person practice tests or live online practice tests. All students enrolling into the program will have the opportunity to take up to 5 unique practice tests. All tests will be taken digitally (like the real test). Once completed, students will receive their score report via their online class portal (the results of which will be viewable from your or your student's account). This is the case regardless of In-Person or Zoom testing proctoring.

If you enroll for in-person proctored practice tests, your tests will take place at the same location as your class (for 120 Warren St, tests will be at 222 Broadway). Tests will be only at the days and times shown on the calendar (click on the calendar icon to view the full calendar). Students will be required to come prepared with their laptop, charger, and coursebook for each in-person proctored practice tests. The test will be supervised by an in-person proctor who gives time & strategy reminders, facilitates a conducive testing environment, and monitors student performance, and administered with other students taking the digital practice tests. With an in-person practice test enrollment, you have the option to test via zoom if preferred (for scheduling or any other reason). You will also have the option to test at times other than the scheduled time using a pre-recorded proctoring video.

If you enroll for online proctored practice tests, your digital tests can take place at any location of your choosing (with a strong internet connection), but not in our in-person session. The tests will be on the same days and approximate times as the in-person proctored tests. The tests are supervised by an online proctor via Zoom who gives time & strategy reminders and facilitates a conducive online testing environment, and administered with other students taking online Zoom practice tests. With an online proctored practice test enrollment, you do not have the option to test in-person (but can pay to upgrade on a one-off basis, space permitting). You will have the option to test at times other than the scheduled time using a pre-recorded proctoring video.

What happens if I have a scheduling conflict? Can I switch classes?

If you have a last-minute scheduling conflict, we will try each of the following options in order:

  1. have your student attend a make-up session in-person (in-person students only; subject to availability)
  2. have your student attend online via Zoom (in-person students)
  3. encourage your student to watch the class recording located in their portal
  4. arrange for a private tutoring make-up session (additional tuition required)

Students may not switch classes within the same semester. However, we may add more dates and times to each subsequent semester. If we do, we may give presently enrolled families a preview of new options for the upcoming semester. Subject to availability, and before general enrollment opens, families can switch their enrollment to a new class option if it works better for their schedule. Please note that additional dates and times are not guaranteed, and that the ability to switch is offered on a first-come-first-served basis.

For example: Riley enrolls into the Saturday class in the Foundations semester. Before the Applications semester, The Tutorverse releases new class dates, including a Wednesday class option. The Tutorverse notifies Riley's family of new class options and a deadline to switch classes. Before the deadline, Riley's family switches her enrollment from Saturday to Wednesday.

What materials are included?

Tuition includes one copy of all materials (replacement copies available at $100/copy). Students will receive:

  • Original and proprietary materials only available to students in our classes
    • 10-Session SHSAT Coursebook (Applications semester)
    • 9-Session SHSAT Coursebook (Reinforcement semester)
  • Our best-selling workbook NYC SHSAT: 1200+ Practice Questions
    • Includes 2 extra Practice Tests not used in class!
  • Virtual classroom portal access, where students and parents can:
    • watch recordings of class lessons
    • submit homework
    • view progress
    • see homework results
    • review detailed practice test score reports
    • play proctoring videos to test independently

What other steps do I need to complete after enrollment?

If your child will be attending class online, please make sure to confirm your shipping address so we can send the class materials to the correct location. You can do this by simply responding to our acknowledgment email, where we will ask for your address confirmation. Ensuring this step is completed will help us get the materials to you in time for class.

If you plan to attend our program at The Ecole, please note that you will need to sign a standard liability waiver prior to your child's first class. The waiver form will be attached to the acknowledgment email you will receive after completing the enrollment process. Kindly review and sign the form before the first class to ensure your child’s participation. Thank you for your cooperation!
